'Sega Forever' Brings Classic Games To Mobile Devices

Sega Forever lets you play retro Mega Drive games for free on mobile

Sega is bringing a collection of its best retro games to Android and iOS devices and you won't have to pay a penny to play them. The debut titles will be the original Sonic the Hedgehog, classic RPG Phantasy Star II, beat 'em up Altered Beast, and the American studio STI-developed Comix Zone and Kid Chameleon.

All games are, and will continue to be, free to download and free to play, and each will be available as its own individual title, so you can easily choose which games you want to play and which you don't. Each title is set to include online leaderboards, cloud saves and Bluetooth controller support; with the last feature being a must given how hard it is to play a platformer on-screen touch controls. This will expand to cover multiple console generations over time, SEGA says, and icludes both "official emulations and ported games". Other classic games like Super Mario Brothers have gotten modern mobile updates for the iPhone.

Although the games all hark back to the golden era of console gaming in the early 1990s, Sega has added some twenty-first century enhancements to the games.

Sega's angle, according to an interview with Sega Networks Chief Marketing Officer Mike Evans, that this is the start of a mobile advertising business. The Sega Forever app costs not a penny, and every game housed within it is also totally free to play.

Sega has come out swinging at the likes of Nintendo's NES Mini and all those mobile retro game emulators with the release of Sega Forever. Dubbed Sega Forever, the collection is free for iOS and Android users, and brings some of the platform's beloved icons back to life for gaming while on the move.

Sega announced the Sega Forever mobile service the early morning on June 21, and not to waste any momentum, they will be making the first batch of retro games available for download on mobile in the United States the following day, June 22.

Every game in Sega Forever is free and offline and includes new features such as cloud storage, controller support, and leaderboards.

Will you be playing the SEGA Forever collection when it launches?

The Sega Forever collection will grow with additional releases coming every two weeks.
