Dashcam Footage Of Police Killing Of Philando Castile Is Made Public

The dash cam video of the shooting of Philando Castile has been released to the public

Castile had a permit to carry a gun. The video doesn't show what happened inside the auto.

Millions of people had already seen the video of the shooting's immediate aftermath, which was famously filmed by Castile's girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, and streamed live on Facebook. (Police investigators later said that five of those shots struck Castile). Although the squad auto footage was described repeatedly and was shown to jurors in the courtroom, it had never been made public until Tuesday.

Investigators released the video from St. Anthony police officer Jeronimo (yeh-RON'-ih-moh) Yanez's squad vehicle Tuesday. While it captures what was said between the two men and shows Yanez firing into the vehicle, it does not show what happened inside the auto or what Yanez might have seen.

Yanez told Castile that his brake lights were out and then asked for his driver's license and insurance.

"You should think from the viewpoint of the officer, reacting to the actions of the driver, who becomes non compliant with the rather loud and direct commands of the officer", Yanez defense attorney Tom Kelly told MPR News earlier in the day. Castile can be heard screaming as the shots ring out and says in agony "I wasn't reaching" as the officer begins to yell "fuck" again and again.

Before Castile could finish his sentence, Yanez drew his own gun.

When Officer Yanez opened fire, another officer near the vehicle jumped back, and Officer Yanez began yelling at the driver.

Ms Reynolds is heard explaining that her boyfriend was reaching for his ID, to which Mr Yanez replied: "I told him not to reach for it". "I told him to get his hand out".

Yanez continues to hold Castile at gunpoint, telling him not to move, while the couple's four-year-old daughter is removed from the vehicle. The officer said he fired because he feared for his life.

Yanez faced multiple charges, including second-degree manslaughter, for the fatal shooting. The video then shows help arriving at the scene.

It was a first - a Facebook Live of the tail end of a Minnesota police officer fatally shooting motorist Philando Castile. Reynolds also testified in court that Castile had followed Yanez's orders.

The shooting death of Philando Castile happened last July during a traffic stop.

Philando Castile's mother, Valerie Castile, said she was "mad as hell" about the verdict and called Yanez a "murderer". "I couldn't get a look at the other passenger, and I'll wait for you".

Last week, a jury acquitted Yanez of manslaughter, but local law enforcement officials revealed that Yanez would not be returning to the police department.

The city says it concluded the public "will be best served" if Yanez no longer works for the city. But a mostly white jury found him not guilty of the charges.

Yanez has been withdrawn from active duty.
