Milwaukee Sheriff Clarke rejects Homeland Security position

Not Released

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke, a tough-on-crime conservative Democrat, will not accept a post with the Department of Homeland Security.

Sherriff David Clarke of Milwaukee, Wisconsin is now saying through representatives that he is rescinding his acceptance of an assistant secretary job with the Department of Homeland Security, which he announced exactly one month earlier.

Also, the governor's office told us Friday it hasn't received Clarke's letter of resignation.

At the time, a spokeswoman for the agency said no announcement on Clarke had been made.

DHS officials never officially announced he'd been offered a position.

The plan had been for Clarke to begin in his new role at DHS at the end of June but according to a source close to the situation, his appointment had been subject to delays that played a part in contributing to his withdrawal.

Clarke spoke in support of Trump at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland last July.

"Sheriff Clarke is 100 percent committed to the success of President Trump and believes his skills could be better utilized to promote the president's agenda in a more aggressive role", Clarke's adviser Craig Peterson told the paper.

Clarke has drawn a considerable amount of controversy as Milwaukee County sheriff. He added he is still reviewing his options, both inside and outside government.

He was hit by allegations last month that he plagiarized content in his master's thesis on homeland security, which he denied.

Critics have faulted Clarke for his management of a Milwaukee County jail where a mentally ill man died in 2016 of dehydration.
