Al Jazeera claims suspension of its Arabic channel Twitter account

Al Jazeera is the flagship broadcaster for Qatar, which is now experiencing turbulence with Gulf states and Saudi Arabia over latter's claims of supporting terrorism.

The dispute began in May when Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani was reported to have made statements on the state news agency supporting Iran.

The UAE foreign minister, Anwar Gargash, said that his country and its allies did not trust Qatar to change its behaviour and end support for groups like the Muslim Brotherhood.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain have cut all diplomatic relations with Qatar, accusing it of backing terrorism. Jordan and Djibouti reduced the level of their diplomatic missions in Qatar. "We wish for the crisis to be resolved quicker than other crises", he said. Qatar has denied funding terror groups.

According to the Times, Palestinians are opposed to the idea, fearing it would normalise ties between Israel and Arab nations before a deal to establish a Palestinian state has been met.

In a fresh twist to the Middle East stand-off that has seen prominent Gulf countries diplomatically corner Qatar, the pan-Arabic media network Al Jazeera's main Arabic Twitter account was briefly suspended on Saturday.

Work on the Qatar base has been fast tracked following the diplomatic spat between Qatar and its Gulf neighbours Saudi, the UAE and Bahrain.

The crisis has put Turkey in a delicate position as Ankara regards Qatar as its chief ally in the Gulf but is also keen to maintain its improving relations with the key regional power Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia said yesterday a Turkish military base similar to that built in neighboring Qatar would not be welcome in the kingdom, insisting it is "not needed". However, there was no military component to action against Qatar, the envoy added. Doha says it is being targeted due to its independent foreign policy. Disruption [by others] will not stop because the truth terrifies them.

There is now tension between Qatar and its immediate neighbours, led by Saudi Arabia, who say Qatar is turning a blind eye to terrorism financiers.

"This is far more dramatic than the diplomatic row that occurred in 2014", says Mehran Kamrava, head of the Center for worldwide and Regional Studies at Georgetown University's outpost in the Qatari capital, Doha.

Abela also stated that the remarks attributed to him in the report, or any other remarks on the situation concerning Saudi Arabia and Qatar are completely false.
