Walkers celebrate cancer survivors at 22nd annual Relay for Life

Cancer survivors, caregivers honored at Relay For Life

The goal was to raise $72,000 dollars.

The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life movement is a fundraising event meant to fight every cancer in every community. As the survivors pass by, clapping and celebrating to the upbeat music, the memories of all those lost over the years surfaces, too.

Walsh described Putnam's Relays for Life as "sister relays-not competitive relays". Crews were also sent to cover Relay activities in Atlanta and in a California location. Hoisington Mayor Clayton Williamson delivered the proclamation designating Friday, June 9, as the 2017 Relay for Life, and a choir made up of survivors gathered and sang the National Anthem.

Harbaruk says participant numbers have dwindled the past few years, adding the Kamloops branch is considering a different type of event for next year's fundraiser.

Teams walk the track Friday evening at the 21st Annual Stutsman County Relay for Life. Since its formation in 1995, the event had been held at the Greeneville Middle School Track. "Another one of our wonderful volunteers, Tina Aulabaugh of Brewster, previous year organized a team and took part in the Patterson Relay".

A moving candlelight ceremony involving the attendees was also led by the Master of Ceremonies Margo Olmstead, who pointed out that nearly everyone has been touched by cancer in some way - either as a patient or as a friend, relative or caregiver of a cancer victim.
