Relay For Life Friday

THE POWER IN PURPLE campaign to help raise funds that will be added in this year’s Relay for Life totals include from left Dina Hines Dell Amy Frederick Mayor Tom Rowland and Janet Conley

Kristen Kolwelter, American Cancer Society Community Manager, Lakeshore Division, said in past years many participants wanted to join in on both relay events and with a 50 percent cost in savings to merge the two, and create, one, it seemed like a positive move for both the community and the American Cancer Society. This year's theme is "board games", so participating teams will have a variety of game-oriented decorations and activities.

Emcee Brenda Strickland along with chairperson Patricia Simms and co-chair Pam Keeping opened the relay, welcoming everyone and thanking them for their support.

Prizes will be awarded to first-place winners.

The Relay For Life of Foxboro-Sharon starts on Saturday, June 17 this year instead of the traditional Friday night start and it will run several hours longer than usual, from 3 p.m.to 11 a.m. It replaces a live auction, but there will be a silent auction and items will be displayed at each teams' site.

In addition, dancers from Dynamic Edge Dance Center will perform at 8 p.m.

Events Friday in Paragould will include walks dedicated to survivors and caregivers, as well as luminarias that honor loved ones who have passed on, those who are now battling cancer, or those who have overcome it. "Relay helps locally and nationally". All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.

Numerous teams participating were formed by Middlebrook students who were members of the Relay Club started by teacher John Priest.

This year, the National Screening Service will be available at the Relay to arrange appointments for that service, which is a bonus for those attending.

Foggy Bottom Productions in Raytown will bring their now-famous fireworks show to Relay for the eighth year in a row. There is much we still don't know about it, about how it turns healthy cells destructive and sends them out of control.

The Relay takes place at Punchestown Racecourse on August 19 and 20. "I guarantee you will enjoy yourself".

Survivor Lap - 6:30 p.m.

The members of Team #Hope, also Middlebrook sixth graders, were participating in Relay for Life for the first time. Glowing for a Cure.

The event ends at midnight.

Rigsby noted if the goal is not reached Friday night, or someone still wants to donate, any donations made through August will count toward this year's fundraising amount. Just that little bit has changed people's lives. "We hope to see all our friends and neighbors there".
