President Trump now under investigation for possible obstruction of justice, WAPO reports

President Donald Trump attends a Cabinet meeting

- The investigation headed by U.S. Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller into Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election now includes a probe of whether President Donald Trump attempted to obstruct justice, according to a report by The Washington Post.

Former FBI Director James Comey testified last week that he told Trump the Bureau was not looking into him personally, before Trump dismissed him.

Comey had confirmed during a congressional testimony in March that the FBI was investigating possible Russian interference in the 2016 election, which included possible collusion between the country and Trump associates.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller last month, testified Tuesday he has seen no evidence of good cause to fire Mueller.

Comey was later sacked, with Trump acknowledging that the Russian investigation was on his mind when he made a decision to dismiss him.

Trump said he fired Comey for poor performance, though he ealso reportedly told a group of Russian officials that the Comey dismissal would help get the Russia probe behind him.

A spokesman for President Donald Trump's lawyer says a Washington Post report that the president is under investigation for possible obstruction of justice came from an "inexcusable and illegal" FBI leak.

Obstruction of justice is broadly defined: It involves any conduct in which a person willfully interferes with the administration of justice.

The investigation into ties between President Trump's campaign and the Russian government has now turned to investigating Trump himself for obstruction of justice, the Washington Post reported Wednesday.

It emerged last week Mr Comey leaked a memo he wrote after meeting Mr Trump to a friend in the media, to combat Mr Trump's claims about the pair's conversations. The investigation has been cloaked in secrecy and it's unclear how many others have been questioned by the FBI.

Mueller could interview Coats, Rogers, and ormer NSA deputy Richard Ledgett, who retired in April, as early as next week.

Trump's legal team quickly denounced the story.

A spokesman for Mueller's team declined to comment.

Comey testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee last week that he was certain his firing was due to the president's concerns about the Russian Federation probe, rather than over his handling of a now-closed FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server as secretary of state, as the White House had initially asserted.

Recent reports have said Trump also requested help from Coats and Rogers to pressure Comey to end the investigation into Flynn's activities.
