About 4000 More US Troops to Go to Afghanistan

FML's were effectively caps set by the White House on the number of troops that could be deployed to each country. The deployment will be the largest of American manpower under Donald Trump's young presidency. He said the USA mission in Afghanistan remains the same - to train, advise and assist Afghan forces - as officials finalize a new strategy to present to.

Public affairs officers at the Department of Defense and Operation Inherent Resolve did not immediately respond to requests from Task & Purpose for comment.

"We can not allow Afghanistan to once again become a launching point for attacks on our homeland or on our allies", he said, alluding to the former Taliban government's granting haven to Al-Qaeda before the September 11, 2011 terror attacks in the US.

Word that President Trump is delegating decisions about troop levels in Afghanistan to the Pentagon arrived at nearly the same time as news that ISIS fighters had captured the old Al Qaeda stronghold of Tora Bora in eastern Afghanistan.

"We are not winning Afghanistan right now", Mattis said.

Trump, who has spoken against the Afghan war, has dubbed the 2001 invasion and following occupation of Afghanistan as "Obama's war", but now his administration is sending thousands of more troops to the war-torn country, signaling a policy shift.

A resurgent Taliban coupled with Islamic State militants have challenged US forces in the region and are taking back territory formerly under control of USA and Afghan troops.

In testimony Wednesday to the defense subcommittee of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Mattis confirmed published reports that Trump had given him authority to set troop levels in Afghanistan.

His testimony comes after President Donald Trump authorised him to "manage" U.S. troop levels in Afghanistan amidst a surge in Taliban attacks in the war-ravaged country.

Mattis' deployment of more troops will be far smaller than Obama's.

The new influx of troops is thought to be in the range of 3,000 to 5,000, according to current and former US officials, as reported by Reuters. In late April President Trump delegated to Mattis the authority for troop levels in Iraq and Syria. "All wars come to an end. And we will do so", the Pentagon chief said before the House subpanel.

Though the invasion wrested control of most of the country from the Taliban, bin Laden fled the country and went into hiding in Pakistan until captured and killed by USA special forces in 2011. However, the danger continues to evolve and that danger requires a commitment to defeat terrorist organizations that threaten the United States, other nations, and the people of Afghanistan.
