Emirates Team New Zealand 2-1 up on Day 1

Two-time defending champion Oracle Team USA left and Artemis Racing of Sweden right compete in the 35th America's Cup sailing event

June 9 Sweden's Artemis Racing secured an America's Cup Challenger showdown against Emirates Team New Zealand by knocking out Softbank Team Japan in their semi-final on Friday.

Artemis Racing skipper Nathan Outteridge feared for his safety when he was nearly run over by Team NZ on the Great Sound off Bermuda.

The victor of the first-to-five series will go on to challenge America's Cup holder Oracle Team USA next week.

"I've dried out a little bit, but apart from that I'm fine", Outteridge said after the race.

Team New Zealand skipper Peter Burling said he wasn't sure if any celebration was planned for beating Britain but felt going for a training session immediately after Friday's racing was a sign of the mindset of the team at the moment.

Under pressure from the Kiwis towards the end of race three, Artemis skipper Nathan Outteridge was sprinting to the portside wheel when he lost his footing and slid off the boat. It's really nice to have that day in the shed tomorrow to really work on the boat and get prepared for the (challenger) finals.

"We hit something just after leaving the marina and didn't have time take the boat up".

But it was another crushing disappointment for SoftBank skipper Dean Barker who was left reflecting on another blown America's Cup lead. On Tuesday, Emirates Team New Zealand capsized at the start of a semifinal race, throwing three crewmen into the water and causing significant damage.

Outteridge's tumble was the latest mayhem in the challenger series.

"In a very short period of time we became one of the strongest competitors in this Cup".

But he empathised with his Australian counterpart, having tumbled from the boat himself while Team New Zealand were preparing in Auckland.

“We had our heads down making sure we were getting everything out of our boat we could to make sure we got past and then realised they had slowed down, and didnt really realise why until we sailed past them about a minute or so later.”. In the first race, Artemis was penalized at the last mark, allowing the Kiwis to win.

"Really happy to walk away with the two wins". "That last race of the day, we were still generating a serious amount of power on board so we could just keep throwing it through some pretty good maneuvers".
