Virginians to determine ballot for governor, among other races

Democrats have seen a surge in candidates for the House of Delegates this year, where they have a longshot at taking back control of the chamber from Republicans in November. Most polls show Gillespie with a double-digit lead.

But former Republican National Committee chairman Ed Gillespie, a more mainstream GOP candidate, has distanced himself from Trump and his policies.

Polling stations are open Tuesday between 6 a.m.to 7 p.m.to determine who will take the place of the current Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who can't run for a second consecutive term under the term limit law unique to Virginia.

The gubernatorial race in Virginia, the only state other than New Jersey electing a new governor this year, is seen as an key test of President Donald Trump's popularity ahead of the 2018 mid-term elections for the Republican-controlled U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. As the mother of three young children, I know that if Tom is elected governor, he will have the integrity and courage to live up to his promise of making Virginia a more inclusive state that provides children of all races and backgrounds with equal opportunity to succeed in life.

The attorney general race will have Democrat Mark Herring, the incumbent, facing Republican John Adams in the November 7 election.

But while the campaign has been fiercely fought, and the polls are tight, the dividing lines between the candidates have proven fuzzier than expected.

The lieutenant governor and the former congressman have few policy differences and share a similar liberal agenda on many issues. Northam has pushed his campaign further to the left and has described Trump as a narcissistic maniac - while Perriello has attempted to reach out to Trump voters by selling a message of economic populism framed through a progressive perspective.

GONYEA: But he said he's voting for Northam, who he thinks is the better candidate.

"Politicians have to be straightforward", Northam said.

For example, if you vote in the Democratic primary in South Richmond, you'll vote for Democratic candidates for Governor, Lt. Governor, Sheriff, and Treasurer. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders. Stewart was one of President Trump's most vocal supporters during last year's election. Despite the higher participation Perriello had hoped for, he still fell short to Northam. And no one is as emblematic of the status quo as McAuliffe, national party chairman from 2001 to 2005. Stewart has waged a campaign to protect Confederate monuments around the state and was the only candidate to not outright reject an alt-right rally in Charlottesville organized by white nationalist Richard Spencer. Gillespie and Stewart say they want to cut the state's income tax rates. Already saddled with low approval ratings nationwide, Trump's numbers are even worse in Virginia, which Clinton won comfortably in the 2016 election.

"If we don't speak up and let people know how we feel by our votes, then we are subject to somebody else telling us what to do", one man said.

Stewart is an ardent supporter of Trump and was a former state campaign chairman for the president's campaign past year.

And Kaine, as Clinton's vice presidential running mate, attacked Trump on all fronts during the campaign.

A photo I.D.is required to vote, and verifying voter registration prior to Election Day is recommended, according to Halifax County Registrar Heather Harding. Stewart earned 42 percent compared to Gillespie's 41 percent in the poll. On the campaign trail, he has largely avoided talking about Trump, who has not weighed in on the race. Frank Wagner, has struggled to gain traction, despite winning the endorsement of The Washington Post's editorial board.
