US opts out of G7 pledge committing to Paris climate accord

Ministers from the Group of Seven (G7) countries on Monday agreed to language on an array of environmental topics, while said that the U.S. stood apart from the other six countries on confronting climate change.

All G7 countries excluding the United States have pledged their commitment to the Paris climate pact during a two-day summit in Bologna, Italy, local media reported on Monday.

The Minister's face-to-face denunciation of the U.S. decision to abandon the accord comes as the office of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is asking a German news magazine to correct a report that said Mr. Trudeau tried to avoid provoking U.S. President Donald Trump by asking German Chancellor Angela Merkel to remove mentions of the Paris accord from a statement on climate change that is to be issued after next month's meeting of G20 leaders in Germany.

She says she made that clear to Scott Pruitt, administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, during a private meeting on the sidelines of a meeting of G7 environment ministers in Italy on Sunday.

Host Italian Environment Minister Gian Luca Galletti said G7 countries bore crucial responsibility for the planet.

Trump announced this month that the USA would not be bound by Paris targets on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, saying they were unfairly damaging to the American economy and overly generous to India and China.

"The majority of the people in the United States are deeply committed to the Paris Agreement", Kerry said.

"The transition to a low-carbon economy is on the march and it has an irreversible dynamic, including in the United States", he said in comments that played on the name of Macron's "En Marche!" movement.

DETROIT-President Trump's decision to withdraw from the 2015 Paris global climate treaty hasn't shaken auto makers' resolve to continue developing cleaner, more fuel-efficient vehicles.

In the point 7 of the 15-page final communique, they "reaffirm strong commitment to the swift and effective implementation of the Paris Agreement, which remains the global instrument for effectively and urgently tackling climate change, and adapting to its effects".

Almost 150 countries, including Canada, have ratified the Paris Agreement which calls for action to reduce pollution that traps heat in the atmosphere and to help developing countries adapt to climate change and cope with threats to their survival.

BOLOGNA, Italy (AP) - Top environment officials from the Group of Seven wealthy democracies met Sunday in Italy amid ongoing differences between the US and other members of the club over how to deal with climate change.

The other G-7 nations, meanwhile, doubled down on their support for the accord. Numerous countries, American citizens, and major corporations such as Apple and Tesla all agree that withdrawing from the Paris Agreement is a bad idea; and cost-benefit analysis wise, Trump's promise is a promise with more costs than benefits.

"The positions expressed at the beginning will undoubtedly remain as they are, but. we definitely made a step forward towards dialogue - aside from climate, there is complete agreement on all the other issues", Galletti added. The remainder of the US delegation were largely quiet, she said.

The five-day visit by Jerry Brown, a Democrat, came just days after Trump declared on 1 June that the U.S. would pull out of the Paris Accord, which broadly commits 195 countries to try and keep the global average temperature below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, and to lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Ford Motor Co. and industry groups didn't condemn Trump's decision, but said their sustainability plans remain unchanged. The discussions in Bologna were also attended by Chile, the Maldives, Ethiopia and Rwanda, four developing countries with a particular interest in combatting climate change.
