North Korea expecting visit from former NBAer Dennis Rodman

Report: Pistons great Dennis Rodman headed to North Korea for another visit

A senior USA government official has said the US wishes former National Basketball Association star Dennis Rodman well on his trip to North Korea.

The trip comes amid high tensions between Washington and Pyongyang - which is now detaining four Americans - following a series of missile tests by the North.

CNN reports that two officials in North Korean confirmed that Rodman is supposed to land on Tuesday.

The half-brother of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un was in possession of US$120,000 (RM511,806) when he was killed at a Kuala Lumpur airport in February, the Asahi reported, adding that he met with an American suspected of connections with a USA intelligence agency four days before his death.

Rodman has visited North Korea at least four times before with most of those visits occurring in 2013 and 2014, according to CNN.

"This visit will be judged not by who he takes with him but by who, if anyone, he brings back", said Scott Snyder, a Korea expert at the Council on Foreign Relations.

According to the report, Kim met with a USA citizen at a hotel four days before the assassination.

The bombastic player - who once wore a wedding dress to promote one of his books - also knows US President Donald Trump, having appeared as a contestant on his reality television show "Celebrity Apprentice".

"It may well have been in return for the information he provided", a Malaysian official said, as cited by the newspaper, referring to the cash found in Kim's possession on the day of the killing.

Rodman routinely distances himself from political events in North Korea.

Officials from North Korea confirmed to CNN that Rodman is expected in Pyongyang Tuesday but declined comments on the objective of the visit.

In April and May, North Korea detained two other Korean Americans, both of them affiliated with the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, a private institution run by Korean American Christians. "U.S.A." he added.

Before entering politics, Trump praised one of Rodman's 2013 trips to North Korea in an interview with Fox News. "Unfortunately, I think a lot of people miss that because they get distracted by his flamboyant personality". Rodman told Kim he has a "friend for life".

The group traveled for a basketball exhibition that pitted the Americans against North Koreans.
