Eric Decker officially released by the Jets

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The team released the veteran wide receiver Monday after being unable to trade him over the past week. Before Decker would be traded to Baltimore, he would need to agree to reduce his $7.25 million salary in 2017 for a Ravens team that doesn't have much cap room. Last season, both struggled thanks to awful quarterback play and only combined for 68 receptions and Decker missed 13 games due to a shoulder injury.

The Ravens, who lost three of their top five receivers from 2016, were one of the first teams to reach out to the Jets about a possible trade when Maccagnan brought up the subject of dumping Decker last week.

The Ravens, among other teams, could be a potential destination as a free agent.

Decker finishes his Jets career with 163 receptions and 19 touchdowns in 33 games. That comes after the Jets tried to trade Decker but couldn't find any teams willing to take on his contract unless the Jets would pay some of his salary.

The Jets' purge of veterans this offseason also has included center Nick Mangold, cornerback Darrelle Revis, guard Breno Giacomini, wide receiver Brandon Marshall and kicker Nick Folk.

Fantasy Impact Although the Jets held on to Decker hoping to facilitate a trade, reports suggest that inquiring teams wanted NY to eat some of the receiver's salary, therefore, nulling any hope of a deal. Decker had said he expected to be ready for the season opener in September.

A third-round pick of the Broncos in 2010, he has amassed 385 receptions, 5,253 receiving yards and 74 touchdowns in his career. His 10 red-zone touchdowns in 2015 set a Jets single-season record. He's averaged 68 catches, 900-plus receiving yards and six touchdowns in his seven-year National Football League career.
