Prime Minister Says London Incidents 'Potential Act Of Terrorism'

"Armed officers responded and shots have been fired", Metropolitan Police said in a statement on Twitter.

The BBC reports more than one person died on London Bridge.

The Sun newspaper, whose offices are beside London Bridge, reported hearing explosions about three hours after the attacks began.

Armed police and emergency vehicles have been dispatched to the scene, where there were unconfirmed reports of bodies lying on the ground, The Independent reported. Jones said that police had taken a man into custody who happened not to be wearing a shirt.

Prime Minister Theresa May said it was a potential act of terrorism and the Metropolitan Police force said it had declared the attacks as "terrorist incidents".

She will hold an emergency ministerial meeting later on Sunday and Facebook has activated its safety check function for people in London to let their loved ones know they are safe.

Without referring explicitly to London, Trump wrote on his personal account: "We need to be smart, vigilant and tough".

The London attack comes at a politically sensitive moment.

Several pedestrians were run over by a van in London on Saturday, according to multiple eyewitness reports.

The current London Bridge opened in 1973 and is made of concrete and steel. "He came down the stairs and went to the bar", Dee, 26, who was visibly in shock and declined to give her last name, told AFP.

London Ambulance said multiple resources were attending the area.

Earlier, Trump retweeted the Drudge Report when it referred to "fears of a new terror attack", although the nature of the incidents had not yet been confirmed by authorities.

One woman told Reuters she saw what appeared to be three people with knife wounds and possibly their throats cut at London Bridge at the Thames river. Far-right white nationalist Thomas Mair is later sentenced to life in prison for her murder.

"I saw that man with a knife in his hand and after that a man started screaming so I knew something wrong was happening", he said.

She said: "I just tweeted it (the offer) because we were here, we have friends stuck in various places".

In March, a British convert to Islam ran down people with a vehicle on Westminster Bridge, killing four, then stabbed a policeman to death outside Parliament. Three of them were conscious.

London Ambulance Service took at least 20 people to six hospitals, the Associated Press reported. Officers have then responded to reports of stabbings in Borough Market.

"We were in an Uber (taxi) going towards London Bridge and suddenly we saw people running. He was being stabbed quite coldly and he slumped to the ground".

The attacks come days ahead of a June 8 election and less than two weeks after a suicide bomber killed 22 people at a pop concert by U.S. singer Ariana Grande in Manchester in northern England.

"I thought at first it was fireworks, then I recognised it was significant gunfire".
