Clayton Kershaw becomes one of the fastest to reach 2000 strikeouts

With his second-inning strikeout of Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Jonathan Villar, Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw reached 2,000 for his illustrious career.

Kenley Jansen had not pitched two innings in a regular season game since June 10, 2013, went two innings on Friday.

Clayton Kershaw struck out 14 over seven innings of one-run ball and became the second fastest pitcher in Major League Baseball history to reach two-thousand strikeouts behind Randy Johnson. Kershaw was dominant, retiring 20 in a row until Domingo Santana hit a two-out solo home run to provide the first run of the game.

Their pitchers set a franchise record with 26 strikeouts, breaking the previous mark of 22 set on August 8, 1972 in a 19-inning loss to Cincinnati.

Both teams combined for 42 strikeouts. He left the game in position for the loss before the Dodgers tied things up in the ninth. Manager Dave Roberts had Chris Taylor pinch-hit for Kershaw.

That's spectacular for any pitcher, let alone one who is nine months shy of 30 years old.

"It will be cool someday, I guess when you retire you look back at that stuff", Kershaw said about the milestone.

Wheeler, 26, saw his first major league action this year with Minnesota, allowing five runs - three earned - in three innings in two relief appearances. With Rich Hill set to face Matt Garza in the pitching matchup, the over/under now sits at 8.5 runs. The all-time strikeout leader, Nolan Ryan, recorded the 2,000th of his eventual 5,714 career strikeouts in his 1,874th inning (currently the third-fastest). His 2.37 ERA entering play on Friday would represent his worst mark in a season since 2012.
