Portland June 10 March Against Sharia Cancelled

The organizer said Wheeler's remarks "endangered every scheduled participant" and said the rally will be moved to Seattle.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, though, seems unfamiliar with that opening stanza of the Bill of Rights.

The ACLU of OR has responded on Twitter, saying in part, "The government can not revoke OR deny a permit based on the viewpoint of the demonstrators". Local publications as well as the Southern Poverty Law Center have described him as a "known white supremacist".

He called on the US government to deny permits for an event Sunday billed as a pro President Donald Trump free-speech rally and the anti-Shariah law rally.

The ACLU of OR responded with a series of tweets Monday, saying in part, "The government can not revoke OR deny a permit based on the viewpoint of the demonstrators".

The ACLU's chapter in OR also rebuked Mayor Wheeler in a series of Twitter posts on Monday.

Wheeler said the city is in mourning from a deadly stabbing on a light-rail train and that the events would exacerbate tensions.

Jeremy Joseph Christian, the man arraigned for killing the two people on the train, was reportedly heard yelling to court staff about his right to "free speech" and said he was "concerned about free speech in Portland". "There will be speakers exercising their free speech, live music, flags, and an uplifting experience to bring back strength and courage to those who believe in freedom", the Facebook post for the event says.

Chrisitan, 35, identifies himself in one of the videos, and he's also seen carrying a baseball bat, which he handed over to officers who approached him. "He frequently used the n-word and saluted Hitler".

"I am appealing to the organizers of the alt-right demonstrations to cancel the events they have scheduled on June 4 and June 10". He also called on the US government to revoke or refuse to issue the necessary permits for the demonstrations. And Mat dos Santos, ACLU Oregon's legal director, added, "Our hearts are broken, but government censorship is not the answer".

"We are all free to reject and protest ideas we don't agree with". Speech, no matter how vile or distaseful, is protected in the United States.

"If we allow the government to shut down speech for some, we all will pay the price down the line", the ACLU of OR says.

Police said Ricky John Best, 53, of Happy Valley, and Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche, 23, were killed in the attack. "You throw one punch, you're going to jail", he said.

The rally organizer also revealed to the cable news outlet that he had no intention of canceling the event: "If I cancel this rally and we don't have a permit, you're talking about hundreds of people just showing up in the park with no leadership, no voice of reason".

You can read her full letter here. "Please condemn any acts of violence, which result directly from hate speech & hate groups".
