GM is accused in lawsuit of cheating on diesel truck emissions

General Motor’s cheating allowed its trucks to pass US inspections even while they spewed emissions two to five times the legal limit as per the complaint filed in Detroit federal court

GM said the allegations are without merit.

According to the complaint, "on-road" emissions testing conducted for the plaintiffs found that Duramax-equipped trucks produced NOx pollutants, comprised of nitrogen and oxygen atoms, two to five times higher than legally permitted, and "many times" higher than their gasoline counterparts.

A civil lawsuit filed in federal court in MI on Thursday claims the diesel versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups produce higher levels of nitrous oxide when they are being driven than during tests.

The suit names both GM and the German supplier Bosch, with Bosch called "an active and knowing participant in the scheme to evade US emissions requirements".

Bosch said it was taking the "allegations of manipulation of the diesel software very seriously" and cooperating with the various investigations, Linda Beckmeyer, a company spokeswoman, said in a statement.

Comparatively, Volkswagen admitted to installing a device to skirt emissions tests on roughly 550,000 vehicles in the USA, which sparked the so-called Dieselgate scandal in 2015 that has ever since increased attention on diesel emissions across the world.

The almost 200-page complaint says GM installed what it called "unlawful, unfair, deceptive, and otherwise defective emission controls". GM is at least the sixth automaker to face charges of emissions cheating.

A class action lawsuit was filed Thursday against General Motors and Bosche over diesel emissions in Silverado and Sierra HD vehicles.

Shares of the Detroit-based automaker were lower over 2.3% during midday trading on Thursday.

Law firm Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP filed the purported class-action lawsuit. The document also frequently mentions Volkswagen and suggests that, to be brought within compliance, these GM trucks are likely to need modifications that could hinder performance as well as fuel economy. Regulators and officials have accused Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler and Fiat Chrysler, among others, of engaging in similar activities.

The law firm behind the suit said GM's violations are even larger than Volkswagen's.
