Chris Christie: 'I wouldn't let General Flynn into the White House'

Christie: I wouldn't have let Flynn in White House

Chris Christie advised Donald Trump against hiring Michael Flynn, both before the November election and afterward, Christie said on Monday.

Christie ran against Trump in the 2016 Republican primary contest, but endorsed him shortly after he dropped out, becoming one of the first prominent establishment-friendly Republicans to back Trump. This warnings came when Christie served as chairman of Trump's transition team and before the team was made aware that Flynn, who served briefly as Trump's national security adviser, was under federal investigation.

"If I were president-elect of the United States, I wouldn't let General Flynn in the White House, let alone give him a job", Christie said.

During the election, it certainly seemed as if Christie was auditioning for a role in the Trump administration - most likely as attorney general, a spot that ultimately went to the even more loyal Trump defender, former Sen.

Christie has made it clear that when he led Trump's White House transition, he did not see eye to eye with Flynn, a retired Army lieutenant general who had been forced out of the Defense Intelligence Agency by former President Barack Obama.

A source told CNN on Monday that Flynn planned to invoke his Fifth Amendment rights in the face of a subpoena from the Senate intelligence committee.

"Yeah, because he's not my cup of tea", Christie said when pressed by one reporter.

"I think the President could be better served than he's been served", Christie said. Last week, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced former FBI Director Robert Mueller's appointment as special counsel in charge of the FBI's Russian Federation probe. "He's a good man, and in my interactions with him, I always found him to be very able".

Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey earlier this month and, according to a report in the New York Times last week, then called Comey a "nut job" during a meeting with Russian diplomats in the Oval Office.

"I do not agree with that characterization of Jim", Christie said.

Both Christie and Flynn denied this at the time.
