UK Labour's main union backer can't see party winning election

None of this means that Labour is on course to win the general election.

The community centre was full to capacity with supporters keen to hear the party leader's vision.

"Labour's mission, over the next five years, is to change all that". The Conservatives remained unchanged at 49%. The Tory campaign, by contrast, is built on one word: "fear".

All of Labour's spending commitments show a clear party commitment to infrastructure spending as a necessity, not an option, which is welcome.

Why is Corbyn doing well? What we do know so far is that it'll be held in the week before the election.

The party's ruling national executive passed itself broad powers to select candidates and the leadership hired a pollster, BMG Research, and an advertising agency, Krow Communications, in preparation for an early election.

McCluskey said his own support for Corbyn was rock solid and he praised Labour's election manifesto, which was launched on Tuesday and promises renationalisation of some services and measures to curb corporate excess.

Prime Minister Theresa May called the snap vote, citing the need to strengthen her hand for Brexit talks, and polls show her Conservatives handing Labour its worst defeat since at least 1983.

"Jeremy Corbyn can't deliver any of this", a Tory spokesman said.

Gideon Skinner, head of political polling at Ipsos MORI, said: "Labour shouldn't get too carried away by the rise they see in the polls".

In the round, however, this is perhaps a more credible - and certainly a more populist - manifesto than many would have expected from Mr Corbyn and his team.

What job exactly? There are two priorities for the Corbyn project.

Labour also pledges to reverse "the cruel decision" to abolish housing benefit for 18 to 21-year-olds as it risks increasing homelessness among young people. Its central elements: to undo the bulk of the Thatcher-era privatisations and to re-establish British trade unionism as a significant force in public life.

But the second priority is to reform the structures and personnel of the Labour party and move its centre of gravity permanently to the left.

Labour sems to have enjoyed a jump in support after its manifesto launch, gaining eight points in the latest Ipsos MORI/Evening Standard poll.

At the same time, 34.9 per cent of readers said they voted Conservative in 2015, and 39.2 per cent said they would vote Conservative this time.

Warning that "the stakes at this election could not be higher", Mr Hammond claimed that Labour's plans could reverse economic gains made over the past seven years and "take us right back to square one".
