House Oversight Chair Jason Chaffetz Will Resign Next Month

There are 1 comment on the USA Today story from Thursday May 18, titled Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz to leave Congress in June, opening top investigative spot. Sitting next to his wife, Julie, and their dog, Ruby, Chaffetz said after almost eight in years in Congress, he wanted a change.

Chaffetz is the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, one of the U.S. government bodies looking into Trump's decision to fire James Comeyas the head of Federal Bureau of Investigation as well as into claims about links between Trump's former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn and Moscow.

ALPINE, Utah (AP) - U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz's ascent to national prominence leading a House oversight committee was rooted largely in his embrace of the spotlight and willingness to take on confrontations.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz will announce Thursday that he will resign from Congress next month, Politico reported.

It's a probe that could have allowed Chaffetz to prove he was honest when he promised constituents at a raucous February town hall that his job was "not to be a cheerleader for the president".

Chaffetz said in a statement published Thursday that he made a decision to resign to spend more time with his family. "And there are a lot of good, quality people who can do this job". "But that is the truth".

Chaffetz, who was first elected to Congress in 2008, had previously announced April 19 that he would not be running for re-election in 2018.

"I hope that's not true".

Prior to his time in office, he worked in communications for more than a decade and served as campaign manager for former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, Jr. Chaffetz became chairman of the House Oversight committee in 2015. Rubio says the controversy has cast a "cloud" over the White House.

Gowdy ran the House Select Committee on the investigation into the State Department's handling of the 2012 terrorist attack in Benghazi.

But Trump's victory complicated Chaffetz' life.

Chaffetz is the chair of the committee that has promised to look into Trump's ties to Russian Federation. He rescinded his endorsement of Trump past year after recordings surfaced of the reality show star bragging about groping women, only to hastily re-endorse Trump shortly before the FBI announced it was reviving its investigation into Clinton's emails.

After Trump won, liberals hammered him for not going after Trump's administration with almost the vigor used against Democrats.

The Utah Congressman announced his plans on Thursday, saying that he would stay on duty until the end of June.
