Twitter Has Made Modifications To Its Privacy Settings And Data Controls

My interests according to Twitter.
     Twitter

"Twitter's announcement is bad news for online privacy", Marc Rotenberg, president of the nonprofit Electronic Privacy Information Center, told The Associated Press. But if the thought of allowing too much personal data sharing gives you the willies, there are options.

Additionally, Twitter is adding a new Personalisation and Data setting that will offer more granular control to users over how it uses the data. You just have to do not forget to actually do it since they're going to to opt you into these changes in a month's time. The policy goes into effect on June 18.

If you've used Twitter recently, you might have noticed a large pop-up informing you that the 140-character social network has updated its privacy policy. Many such networks no longer honor that option anyway.

Twitter no longer supports Do Not Track feature that is present in many browsers which stop advertisers from tracking your browser history. Twitter states that despite its early support "an industry-standard approach to Do Not Track did not materialize".

Twitter is trying to be more transparent about how your profile is shown to potential advertisers. And tailored advertisements require a bunch of information about who you are and what you like. Basically, whenever you click on a link that is embedded in a tweet, that data gets stored by Twitter to make suggestions based on those selections. Previously, the platform kept this information for 10 days. The changes are rolling out over the next few days, so it's possible that you won't see the new controls straight away.

The update also includes new rules on sharing data with partners.

You can also select whether or not you want the company to track where you see Twitter content across the web, or share your private data with its partners.

If a more custom experience isn't something you're a fan of, there is good news.

The latest Twitter update might be a bit startling if (like me), you're the proud owner of a tinfoil hat. "Each category of data will be clearly marked, and you will be able to view or modify this data directly".

Twitter has announced a suite of tools that allow you more access to your information and more control over how it's used.

And: "This setting lets Twitter share certain private data (which will never include your name, email, or phone number) through select partnerships". What that means is that you'll need to start being more proactive about your privacy and safety if you don't want your Twitter feed overwhelmed with personalized ads.

"Do Not Track signals a user's opt-out preference with an HTTP header, a simple technology that is completely compatible with the existing web".

Just know that the default setting is for everything to be enabled - so if you have an issue, you have to manually hop in to opt out and customise the settings.

However, you can still switch off ad personalization from this page in the Twitter settings.
