Turkey demands US fire envoy in spat over Syrian Kurds

Turkey considers the People's Protection Units, or YPG, in Syria a terror organization and an extension of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has waged a three-decade-long insurgency against the Turkish state.

Erdogan said he warned Trump that Turkey would combat YPG if the group posed any security threat.

Erdogan said that the United States had made its decision on the subject of the Raqqa operation and that Turkey could not participate, given the YPG involvement.

"The Turkish government owes an apology; perhaps they forgot we have unalienable rights in this country", Cardin tweeted.

"When we take this step we don't speak or consult with anyone as we don't have any time to waste".

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Thursday he wanted Brett McGurk, the USA special envoy to the coalition against Islamic State, removed from his post, saying he supported Kurdish militants.

"Brett McGurk, the USA's special envoy in the fight against Daesh (Islamic State), is definitely and clearly giving support to the PKK and YPG. It would be beneficial for this person to change", he said, accusing the diplomat of carrying on Obama-administration policies.

"The actions seen outside the Turkish Embassy yesterday in Washington, D.C. stand in contrast to the First Amendment rights and principles we work tirelessly to protect each and every day", the police statement said.

Differences over Syria policy have caused friction with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally Washington.

Cavusoglu said Turkey received USA assurances that arms sent to the YPG would be used only against IS, without explaining how this would be monitored.

Last month, Turkish warplanes bombed Kurdish fighters in Iraq's Sinjar region and YPG militia in Syria.

"We should throw their ambassador the hell out of the United States of America", said McCain on MSNBC's Morning Joe show, in response to video that appears to show the violence.

"Just hours after the meeting at the White House, Erdogan's security detail violently assaulted Kurdish, Armenian, Ezidi and other peaceful protesters outside the Turkish Ambassador's residence".

Authorities say nine people were hurt and two arrests were made during an altercation at the Turkish ambassador's residence in the USA capital.

McCain said "this kind of thing can not go un-responded to diplomatically".

US officials strongly criticized the Turkish government after video appeared to show its president's security forces pushing past police and violently breaking up a protest outside their diplomatic residence in Washington.
