Military service looms for Players champion Si Woo Kim

When Kim Si-woo tapped in for par on the 18th green at Sawgrass to clinch victory in the Players Championship on Sunday, it represented only the fourth time in 19 PGA Tour starts this season that the 21-year old South Korean had managed to complete 72 holes at an event with a halfway cut.

Kim carded a flawless final round of 69 to finish 10 under par, three shots ahead of Poulter and former Open champion Louis Oosthuizen.

Si Woo Kim, of South Korea, chips onto the third green during the final round of The Players Championship golf tournament Sunday, May 14, 2017, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

Kim, almost two years younger than Adam Scott when the Australian won in 2004, is also the first player from Asia to win twice on the PGA Tour before the age of 22. While no male Korean golfers were able to crack their way into the top 30 in the world ranking previous year, there were five Koreans ranked in the top 10 of the Rolex Ranking, a ranking system for female golfers.

3 - It was a bad day for 54-hole co-leader Kyle Stanley who closed with a 75 to finish in a tie for fourth. The Queenslander started the final round poorly with two bogies in his first nine holes, but he bounced back with four back nine birdies to card a two under 70.

Kim followed in the footsteps of South Korean K.J. Choi, who won the 2011 Players Championship and was all too happy to provide his countryman some tips about his experience. He missed the par putt, and only had one really good look at birdie the rest of the way.

However, after fellow pro Brian Gay discovered a discrepancy in the points allocation for players coming back off medical exemptions, the Tour recalculated his points tally and Poulter was handed a lifeline until the end of the season.

This win sees him move 45 places up the world rankings to a career high 28th. After a 72 in the second round, Kim had one of the better showings on a wind-blown Saturday afternoon with a 68, putting him two shots behind Holmes and Stanley. "He's gone clean out there today, which is extremely impressive under that pressure". "You up-and-down when you're in trouble, you just don't give shots away".

Rafa Cabrera Bello of Spain was never going to win, but it will be hard to forget how he finished. His wedge came up well short, and his long putt from just off the green ran 6 feet by the cup. He earned a card at age 17, but he could not become a tour member until he turned 18 the following June.

Defending champion Jason Day had a quadruple-bogey nine at the par-five 16th and a double-bogey at the par three 17th to shoot 80 and plunge to equal 60th.
