Eagles sign RB Blount to one-year deal

LeGarrette Blount

The Philadelphia Eagles made a pretty big move on the watered-down free agent market Wednesday, adding running back LeGarrette Blount to the mix on a one-year deal. He suffered a serious neck injury that sidelined him for the final three games last season.

After a hip injury kept him out half of the 2015 season, Blount had an fantastic year in 2016. That said, he averaged just 3.9 yards-per-carry, which was the second lowest total of his career. His 18 rushing touchdowns led the National Football League and he found the end zone in all but three games. Appearing in only 13 games Smallwood got 77 carries with 312 rushing yards and a touchdown. But he was released before the season began, and he's since played for the Buccaneers, Patriots and Steelers.

Behind David Johnson, the Cardinals only have Kerwynn Williams, 2016 undrafted rookie Elijhaa Penny, fifth-round pick T.J. Logan and undrafted rookie James Summers.

The desire for Blount in Detroit was understandable, but the attraction was mostly superficial based on counting stats Blount achieved last season because he racked up so many carries. That means in six out of seven years in the NFL, Blount has failed to reached double-digit touchdowns.

We have to wait and see the contract structure for Blount because it is likely to be heavily incentive-driven.

Well, it's basically the same logic I just used predicting Blount scoring under 10 rushing touchdowns in 2017.

In eight playoff games, all with the Patriots, the product of OR rushed for 470 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging 4.2 yards per lug. They finished 16-0 in 2007 en route to a loss to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII.

Blount, who will turn 31 in December, is coming off a career season for the Super Bowl champion Patriots. He's always had my back from the first time I met him.

Needing a running back who could turn successful short yard downs the Eagles went into the NFL Draft with their eyes set on Dalvin Cook.
