Yates expected White House to move quickly on Flynn's Russian Federation ties

White House furious after being trolled with Russia Oval Office photos

Fired acting Justice Department attorney general Sally Yates said in an interview Tuesday that "there was nothing casual" about warnings she gave the Trump administration about then-national security adviser Michael Flynn.

The former acting attorney general also noted that the White House was being misleading when they say that Don McGahn didn't get full access to the Flynn information until February 2.

The White House has previously said it did not rescind Flynn's security clearances in the interim period after Yates made her notification, but before he was sacked. In any event, because she was terminated, one issue Yates could not explain was why, despite what she told the White House about Flynn, 18 days transpired before he got the axe.

She demurs on whether she thought that his contact with Russian officials was a fireable offense.

Transcripts of Flynn's contacts with Kislyak reportedly showed that he discussed US sanctions that the Obama administration had placed against Russian Federation in response to its meddling in the presidential campaign. "Whether he's fired or not is a decision for the president of the United States to make, but it doesn't seem like that's a person who should be sitting in the national security adviser position". That's where Yates comes in. The interview was taped on Monday, before the news about a memo by fired FBI Director James Comey documenting a request by Trump for Comey to drop his probe into Flynn.

The report, published first by The New York Times, said that Trump pressed Comey to pledge his loyalty shortly after his January inauguration. He didn't mention any talk of sanctions.

"This was a serious compromise situation". Several federal courts eventually blocked the ban (and its revised follow-up) from being enforced and Yates herself also instructed the Department of Justice not to defend the ban, citing its unconstitutionality. Flynn is interviewed (by the FBI) on the 24th. "We get the readout on the 25th and have consult about impact on investigation, and I call [The White House] first thing on the 26th", she told the New Yorker.

Yates met with White House general counsel Donald McGahn on January 26 and January 27 to discuss the Flynn situation.

As she did in her Senate testimony, Yates, a 27-year veteran of the Justice Department, told Cooper that she conveyed a sense of urgency in her conversation with McGahn and warned him that the Russians knew about Flynn's "underlying conduct".

In Tuesday's interview, Yates said that wasn't the case. But I didn't know if something else had been done that maybe I just wasn't aware of. No, Yates replied, "Is there an emoji for that?" Michael Flynn remained in the administration as National Security Advisor.

YATES: I told him it wasn't our call.
