Boris Johnson confronted by Sikh woman after 'whisky in temple' gaffe

Railway

A spokesperson for Boris Johnson said: "He was simply making the point that a free trade deal with for example India could be huge for both sides pointing out that in India billions of litres of whisky are consumed every year but there is at 120 per cent on imports of Scotch whisky".

The Foreign Secretary used alcohol as an example of the benefits of a trade deal between the United Kingdom and India during a Conservative Party visit.

Some Sikh teachings consider alcohol to be prohibited, although many Sikhs in the United Kingdom do drink alcohol. And then made his point about a free trade deal with India and emphasised how that will be a reality once Britain exits the European Union.

He spoke of the potential for a free trade agreement between India and the United Kingdom after Brexit, suggestion that the removal of a high duty would enable greater exports of whiskey between the two countries.

Sikhism eschews consumption of liquor, but a seemingly unaware Johnson made a pitch for ending trade tariffs on whisky to boost exports.

As such, alcoholism is beginning to be seen as a negative vice amongst Sikhs more and more, as recognition of the damages of alcoholism continue to rise.

Some were also said to have quietly attempted to advise Mr Johnson to stop discussing alcohol when he began speaking about whisky.

In fairness to Johnson, while Akal Takht Sandesh (a religious code of conduct) states that Sikhs "must not take hemp, opium, liquor, tobacco, in short any intoxicant", many Sikhs living in the United Kingdom do drink alcohol.

His comments provoked a furious response from some members of the crowd, but one women, named as Balbir Kaur, was described by witnesses as being "absolutely livid". I'm a practicing Sikh.

Johnson was in town to support Bristol East Conservative Party candidate Theo Clarke. After promising free trade to end tariffs on whisky between UK & India, Sikh lady informs it's against religion.

Bhai Narinderjit Singh, general secretary of the Sikh Federation, told the Guardian that "no politician in his right mind" would speak in a gurdwara about a trade deal involving alcohol.

"It is a requirement that Sikhs should not consume any intoxicants. There are signs up in all gurdwaras".

Boris Johnson was reprimanded on a visit to a gurdwara in Bristol for talking about alcohol in the sacred building.

A spokesman for Johnson denied that it was a gaffe, claiming instead that he was sympathising with the woman's personal situation.

The source said Mr Johnson only said sorry when expressing sympathy about her personal story, and not as an apology. "There was no gaffe. The temple regulars loved him being there".
