Trump claims 'absolute right' to share info with Russia

The White House scrambled to respond to the report Monday night issuing several statements before sending H.R. McMaster Trump's national security adviser who participated in the meeting out to speak with White House reporters

It was a carefully couched response, echoed by secretary of state Rex Tillerson, which avoided the allegation being made that Trump revealed enough classified information to potentially allow the Russians to identify its source.

Sasse, a frequent critic of Trump, emphasized on "Fox & Friends" there is a lot of information about the situation that he and other don't know yet.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday defended his decision to disclose information to Russian officials during a White House meeting last week, saying he had an "absolute right" to share "facts pertaining to terrorism and airline flight safety".

The reports came days before Trump departs on Friday for his first overseas trip as president, to Saudi Arabia, Israel, Italy and Belgium.

The Post reported that after the meeting, the White House "took steps to contain the damage, placing calls to the CIA and the National Security Agency".

"Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said that such media speculations were part and parcel of the campaign that had been launched long before the USA presidential election with the aim of putting political pressures on the new administration in the White House and for bargaining over various appointments and lobbying".

One senior North Atlantic Treaty Organisation diplomat quoted by Reuters said: "If true, this is not going to instil confidence in allies already wary of sharing the most sensitive information". "I get great intel".

For the leader of Senate Republicans, the biggest concern is that the controversy over Trump's sharing of secrets - with the successor to what Republican President Ronald Reagan once labeled the "evil empire" - is that it's distracting lawmakers from their legislative program.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak publicly, would not say which country's intelligence was divulged. CIA Director Mike Pompeo was to brief members of the House intelligence committee later in the day. Bob Corker of Tennessee, said the White House is "in a downward spiral right now".

On Monday, McMaster told reporters: "The president and the foreign minister reviewed a range of common threats to our two countries including threats to civil aviation. And the president did not disclose any military operations that were not already publicly known". He's openly questioned the competency of intelligence officials and challenged their high-confidence assessment that Russian Federation meddled in last year's presidential election to help him win. So far no one in the GOP's leadership on Capitol Hill is calling for an independent investigation or a special committee to investigate any Trump ties to Russian Federation.

A senior U.S. official told AP that Trump shared details about an Islamic State terror threat related to the use of laptop computers on aircraft with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak.

But he added: "Our story says that the nature of the information provided would have allowed the Russians to "reverse engineer" to discover the sources and methods". AP writer Jan M. Olsen also contributed.
