Rally Held At Dallas Courthouse To Honor Teen Killed By Police

DOJ Investigating Fatal Shooting of 15-Year-Old Jordan Edwards Many question how the Trump administration will handle the sensitive case

The officer was sacked in the aftermath and soon after, arrested and charged.

Fired Balch Springs police officer Roy Oliver is charged with murder for shooting and killing 15-year-old Jordan Edwards on April 29th.

"His favorite color was red, and he loved football", said Jordan's step-mother Charmaine Edwards.

Roy Oliver, 37, of Combine, was sacked from the Balch Springs Police Department and charged with murder last week after he fired a rifle into a auto full of teenagers as they left a party in April.

Balch Springs, pop. 24,000, is on the southeast edge of the Greater Dallas Metro area.

On Tuesday, the Chief of Police of Balch Springs, Jonathan Haber announced at a press conference that Oliver has been dismissed. Haber said the shooting failed to meet the department's "core values".

DALLAS (AP) - The U.S. Justice Department has launched an investigation into the fatal shooting of a black 15-year-old by a white police officer, a spokeswoman for the Dallas County District Attorney's Office confirmed Thursday. She said she did not know the scope and focus of the investigation of the Balch Spring Police Department, and a message left for a Justice Department spokesman was not returned.

An arrest warrant affidavit says Oliver and another officer were dispatched on a call of underage drinking at a party at around 11 p.m. local time (midnight ET), they heard sounds that resembled gunshots outside and were investigating when a Chevrolet Impala that Edwards and the others were in was seen driving away, ignoring an officer's commands to stop.

The Dallas County District Attorney has vowed to act in fairness and seek justice.

The auto was driven by Edwards' stepbrother, and Edwards brother was also in the vehicle, according to a lawsuit filed on behalf of the family. "We plan to see it through to the end". "We discussed the amount of evidence provided to our team, the communication and updates that will be provided to the family and what will be expected of the family in preparing for the prosecution".

A federal wrongful death complaint has also been filed against Oliver and the City of Balch Springs for his use of excessive and deadly force.

"We believe a lot has been done in this case", said Johnson. They want their son to be a catalyst "for change all over the nation", he said.
