Manus Island Detention Centre Demolition

Images shared by the Refugee Action Coalition show bullet holes in the walls of the Manus Island detention centre

Australia's refugee processing centre on Manus Island will commence closure in two weeks, with asylum seekers told on Monday to "consider their options".

It comes as the Turnbull government concedes it still does not know how many asylum seekers would be be relocated to the United States under the controversial resettlement deal once labelled "dumb" by President Donald Trump.

Those who have not been found to be refugees - about 400 people according to Mr Dutton - can either return to their home country, with a $20,000 resettlement package, or will be "removed from PNG by the government of PNG" without any assistance.

"You can not stay at the regional processing center", an unnamed official told detainees, according to a recording obtained by ABC and Guardian Australia. The official said, "No one will be resettled in Australia". "You need to consider your options", the official said in a recording heard by the BBC.

While the detainees were told the move would not affect their refugee status or the eligibility for resettlement in the U.S., they were warned that "disruptive or hard behaviour could exclude you from resettlement".

"Manus prison is full of tension", Boochani, wrote in his next tweet.

"The potential here is that some detainees may die as a result of the announcement".

AAP is seeking comment from the Department of Immigration.

The agreement, struck between Australia and the Obama administration, allows for up to 1,250 refugees on Manus Island and Nauru to migrate to the US.

"Beyond the reports of physical and sexual abuse, including of children; inadequate medical attention; suicides and attempted suicides; even a murder; the extinguishment of hope has pushed people to the edge", a coalition of organizations wrote in a joint call for action in February. "We owe them protection and safety now".

Iranian refugee Amir Taghinia told BuzzFeed News the move was a ploy by the Australian government to pretend the centre had "closed" while still detaining asylum seekers on the other side of the island.

The official said the USA deal - struck by the Turnbull government and the Obama administration for the United States to take up to 1,200 refugees from Manus and Nauru - remained in place and officials would conduct further visits "in the coming months".

"You have an opportunity to get on with your life". In exchange, Australia agreed to resettle refugees from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
