USA airplane laptop ban could be extended to Europe

While several sources claim that the expansion of the large electronics ban is coming, there has been no official word on the change.

The current ban by the USA imposes the restrictions on flights from Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Turkey and Morocco. They spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the meeting publicly.

She added that the European Union had no new information about a specific security concern.

The Trump administration has said the original ban was necessary because intelligence suggests terrorists are now able to hide explosives in laptops and other devices.

An industry-backed group, the Airline Passenger Experience Association, said the USA government should consider alternatives. Both US and European officials have said that they're waiting on the US Department of Homeland Security to make an announcement, but it is not yet clear as to when that might happen.

"Just from London-Heathrow Airport, there's about 110 flights a day that fly to the USA - it presents a challenge of how do you do that in a way that is efficient and effective", Pistole said.

The UK announced that it was in close contact with the United States government and intelligence agencies, prompting speculation about possible threats involving large electronic devices.

The airline industry strongly opposes any move to expand the electronics ban, which could cost airlines millions of dollars in lost customers.

Jenny Burke, a Homeland Security spokeswoman, said no final decision has been made on expanding the restriction. John F. Kelly, the Homeland Security secretary, is to brief senators on security topics on Thursday, according to a Senate aide.

"Why are laptops the target of such a ban despite the United States' investment in airport security and screening procedures? It will take more time to negotiate", he said. "After a week of quite big difficulties, 95 percent of people will understand the practicalities". The head of the International Air Transport Association, Alexandre de Juniac, told CNNMoney in March that it wasn't an appropriate solution to the threat, would hurt the airlines affected, and should be overturned.

The ban on carry-on computer is presently imposed on eight countries and forces passengers to put their devices into checked baggage. The airline flies between Cincinnati and Paris.

Leicester reported from Paris.
