Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 lives up to its potential

At 7:00 p.m. on May 4, groups of moviegoers decked out in costumes or their favorite comic apparel headed to movie theaters for the long-awaited sequel, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2".

Although the post-credit scene neither confirmed nor denied Kraglin's term as an official Guardian, James Gunn has put speculations to rest by revealing the Ravager's fate.

The sad thing about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is that it's just not that much fun-which is a problem, because movies like this should be fun, especially when the first one practically defined the word "fun". The film, which starred Charlie Hunnam as the title character, was made on a $175 million budget, but bad reviews and the dominance of Guardians had it projecting for a $25 million opening.

At the film's start, the team is established and stronger than ever before.

Rocket has stolen valuable batteries from The Sovereign, leading to a plethora of chase scenes.

The primary narrative concerns Quill reuniting with his previously unknown bio-dad, who turns out to be an upbeat, attractively human-shaped non-human called Ego (Kurt Russell). He does an excellent job giving us an insight into the minds of every member of the team, finding time for each to have at least one emotional moment.

In a flashback segment, set in Missouri, we see a young Kurt Russell romping in the woods with a handsome woman.

Universal's "The Fate of the Furious" moved to fourth place with an estimated 5.3 million US dollars in North America in its fifth weekend.

A pattern can be seen amongst most of these films: sequels are becoming darker than their initial debuts. When did Gunn decide on that plot point? That is perhaps where this film excels, and possibly even outdoes the first film. Such movies as "Captain America: Civil War" dive into the very essence of what makes us who we are, bringing up the idea of right and wrong and pitting the ones we love against each other, like Iron Man and Captain America. Rocket stays behind with Groot and Nebula so he can fix their ship. So when Feige hired Gunn for "Guardians", he clearly didn't want a lock-step director. As we continue to see the arc of his character, we once again fall in love with a CGI animal that struggles with the fact that he is the result of scientific experimentation. The humor, which seemed so crisp and spontaneous in the first movie, now feels scripted and forced. With a minimum of seven characters all sharing screen time, the film does its best to equally develop each of them.

Just like the original, this film has plenty of levity. With Vol. 2 now smashing it at the Box Office and Vol. 3 already confirmed to be on the way, we're likely all going to be hooked on a feeling for quite some time to come.
