Eurovision finals interrupted by mooning streaker draped in Australian flag

Portugal's Salvador Sobral performs with the song

Portugal's Salvador Sobral won the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv after performing a jazz-style ballad written by sister Luisa, beating second-place Bulgaria.

Over 1,300 journalists from 80 countries were also in the host city Kyiv to cover the event.

Russian Federation annexed the Crimean Peninsula in 2012, leading to a years-long military conflict between the two nations.

Portugal has won this year's Eurovision Song contest with a poignant love song, sung in Portuguese.

This year's contest was in danger of being overshadowed by politics, however, despite the rules generally discouraging political overtures.

Ukraine banned Samoylova from traveling to the capital of Kiev after allegations emerged she illegally entered Crimea to perform in 2015.

But Ukraine was determined to host as expected and organizers announced earlier this month that all the tickets for the grand final had sold out.

In a grim reminder of the continued conflict in the east, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko cancelled his scheduled appearance at the competition after four civilians were killed in artillery attacks that Kiev blamed on the separatist rebels. "That said, there is safety in numbers or at least one would hope".

Of the 12 most recent Eurovision winners, nine have performed between the 17th and 22nd slot on the night.

The victor was decided in 2 sets of votes; the first 50% of the votes were determined via each of the national juries from each participating country which were unveiled in the first half of the voting by each country's chosen spokesperson, whilst the remaining 50% was decided tonight in the public televote and unveiled by the hosts in the second half of voting.

Commentator Graham Norton and one of his Australian counterparts were not alone in remarking that the line-up was hardly indicative of the contest's stated aim.

The latest edition of the contest, that began in 1956 with just seven countries, offered the usual wacky stage acts and cheesy beats.

First they were 43 acts, then Russian Federation had to withdraw leaving 42 to compete at the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest. Portugal remained first after their performance, but at the end when all acts had performed, Bulgaria took over the first place with the bookmakers. Israel won the competition three times, most recently in 1998, when Dana International, a trans woman, won with "Diva".
