White House calls Sally Yates a 'political opponent' of Trump

Graham takes shot at Trump in Russia hearingMore

Former official says she told the White House that its former national security adviser could be blackmailed by Russian Federation. She told the committee that she sought to meet with White House officials as "a matter of some urgency" after seeing the intelligence intercepts.

Yates confirmed reports that she had told the White House, six days into Trump's administration, that Flynn, a former military intelligence chief, had not been honest with Vice President Mike Pence about his discussions with the Russian ambassador to Washington, leaving him vulnerable to leverage from Moscow. Now, why was Yates surprised? He also labeled her "not exactly someone excited about President Trump".

Senator John Cornyn, the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, was one of a handful who grilled Yates about her objections to Trump's travel ban. "Somebody came over, gave us a heads up, told us there were materials,"Spicer said".

- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 8, 2017Biggest story today between Clapper & Yates is on surveillance. "We told them that the vice president and others were entitled to know that the information they were conveying to the American people was not true".

Notably, Trump's own White House requested the House and Senate investigations after he took to Twitter on a Saturday morning and accused Obama of tapping the phones in Trump Tower. Amy Klobuchar said Tuesday, the day after Yates' testimony to a Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing.

She stated that she had warned President Trump about Flynn, as well as revealing that Russian Federation has had dirt on Flynn for a long time and would have been able to succeed in blackmailing him. "What if we just dismissed someone because a political opponent of the president had made an utterance, you would argue that it's pretty irrational".

"We began our meeting telling him that there had been press accounts of statements from the vice president and others that related conduct Mr. Flynn had been involved in that we knew not to be the truth", Yates said.

Known as a tough and independent prosecutor, Yates has been a target of Trump's ire since her refusal in January to support his controversial immigration ban on nationals from several Muslim-majority nations-for which he fired her.

Yates and McGahn met again the next day. "She decided what was going to be constitutional and unconstitutional and she looked beyond the order which had been crafted", Ashcroft said.

And the pre-election contacts between Gen. Michael Flynn and the Russian ambassador, which cost Flynn his White House job, had nothing to do with influencing the vote.

Flynn, a retired general once seen as a potential Trump vice president, has emerged as a central figure in the Russian probes.

During that section of the hearing, Clapper described as accurate a report in the Guardian newspaper that British intelligence officials became aware in late 2015 about suspicious interactions between Trump advisers and Russian agents, and that the information was passed on to US intelligence agencies.

Early on in the race for the Democratic nomination, Carter said he believed former secretary of state Hillary Clinton would get the nomination "because money dominates, and she has an inside track to the massive amounts that are going to pour into the Democratic Party side".
