Erdogan hopeful for breakthrough in dispute on arming Kurds

The U.S. decision to directly arm the Syrian Kurds fighting the so-called Islamic State is not a complete shift in the White House administration's policy with the Kurds or Turkey, but it is a necessary step in securing the defeat of militants on the ground, U.S. -backed fighters said.

"I have no doubt that Turkey and the United States will work this out with due considerations, significant attention paid to Turkey s security to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation s security and the continuing campaign against ISIS", Mattis said, using an alternate acronym for IS. "The head of this terror organization is living in the U.S. Since we are partners as we are friends and friendly countries, you should deport him as soon as legal procedures are complete". Turkey along with Saudi Arabia and Qatar from the very beginning have been supporting the Sunni radicals, who eventually transformed into a powerful terrorist organization.

"The recent strike against the YPG might have been created to concentrate minds in Washington before Erdogan's visit, but it probably cast a shadow over the talks in advance", the diplomat said. Turkey supports these zones, but it is wary that regions along its borders held by the YPG with USA and Russian support might be officially declared safe zones by Washington and Moscow. At that point, the ruling party seemed more confident in its position (reminiscent of the start of Operation Euphrates Shield, launched after the July 15 coup attempt) and rightly believed that such a move would generate public support even beyond its own voter base. Both the Euphrates Shield Operation and the recent airstrikes illustrate that, contrary to assertions that the coup attempt-linked arrests have undermined Turkey's counter-terrorism capabilities, in fact the government and the military are now pursuing counter-terrorism goals much more effectively and in a more harmonized manner. So far, there has been no statement in regard to the plan concerning the YPG, while, at the same time, some from the US administration continue to act like a public relations staff for the YPG.

The U.S.is expected to provide supplies such as heavy machine guns, mortars, antitank weapons, armored cars and engineering equipment, according to the New York Times. The Kurds of Afrin are also locked in a struggle with the Sunni Arab fundamentalists and so have a tacit alliance with Assad (though they are at odds with Damascus in some ways due to their demand for a decentralized, federal Syria).

Through the direct military assistance of the US administration to the YPG, a new threshold has been passed.

Rivlin added, "Under Israeli sovereignty, we continue to build Jerusalem, the eternal capital of the Jewish people". But Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, speaking in London on Friday said that the U.S. has stressed it continues to regard the PKK as terrorists and will pursue the organisation's money trail. The public reaction for this decision could have significant repercussions for the U.S.'s image and standing in the world.

Ilnur Cevik, who advises Erdogan on foreign policy, is also not hopeful about a positive outcome from the Erdogan-Trump talks.

"We'll work out any of the concerns".

The meeting will not be without controversy - in April, Turkey voted to greatly expand Erdogan's powers as president in a referendum that critics decried as tainted.
