Apple to spend $200 million supporting Corning plant in Ky

The Apple-Corning agreement comes on the heels of a commitment by Verizon to buy from Corning up to 20 million kilometers of optical fiber each year, from 2018 to 2020, for hardline networks that will deliver services to homes and businesses and to backhaul the company's coming 5G network.

Apple has found its first target for a new fund aimed at improving advanced manufacturing around the world.

The investment will go toward R&D, capital equipment needs, and glass processing at the 65-year-old Corning plant.

Since the inception of Gorilla Glass in 2007, the partnership between Apple and Corning has created and sustained almost 1,000 United States jobs across Corning's R&D, manufacturing and commercial functions, including over 400 in Harrodsburg.

Williams said the money is the first of $1 billion the company plans to spend on US-based companies from its Advanced Manufacturing Fund. President Donald Trump has been a vocal critic of American companies - and Apple in particular - that outsource production to non-U.S. manufacturers.

Apple said on Friday that Corning will receive $200 million from the fund. Corning has been an Apple supplier for 10 years now, making it a rather obvious target for investment from the fund.

Apple said earlier in the month that the $1B fund is meant to create a "ripple in the pond" effect, where jobs will be created in other companies working with manufacturers who receive Apple investment.

"Corning is a great example of a supplier that has continued to innovate and they are one of Apple's long-standing suppliers", Apple COO Jeff Williams said in a statement. Apple notes the partnership to develop "Gorilla Glass", since the first iPhone was introduced in 2007, has led to 1,000 jobs for Corning in the U.S. Overall, Apple claims 2 million jobs in the U.S. created by its spending, including 450,000 jobs attributable to spending on suppliers. The company's Gorilla Glass technology, which was unveiled in 2007, is created to bolster the strength of regular glass, reducing chances of damage to smartphone, tablet, and smartwatch screens.
