Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive celebrates 25 years

The United States Postal Service will partner with United Way again this year for the annual "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive. The Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive, the country's largest single-day food drive, provides residents with an easy way to donate food to those in need in the community.

"Please! We encourage everyone, please be sure you put your non-perishable food items out at your mailbox on May 13, [this] Saturday" said De De Flounlacker, Executive Director of Manna Food Panties.

The local food drive is a team effort between North County postal carriers who will pick up food donations from the homes of area residents and Brother Benno's Auxiliary. "The food drive is just one of the many ways letter carriers give back to our communities".

Last year, the Augusta and Aiken post offices brought in nearly 150,000 pounds of nonperishable food for the drive.

Hood County letter carriers will be picking up more than outgoing mail on Saturday.

The Edmonds Food Bank at United Methodist Church and the Westgate Chapel Food Bank together serve over 10,000 families per year.

Residents who live in zip codes 30028, 30040 or 30041 can place a bag of non-perishable food items at their mailbox on Friday, May 12 or Saturday, May 13, and their local letter carrier will collect it as they deliver mail along their usual postal routes.

The Salvation Army of Virginia is partnering with the United States Postal Service to stock its food pantry, which is "really quite low" now, said Envoy Kris Fuqua, Virginia Salvation Army corps administrator.

This year marks the 25th Anniversary of the national Stamp out Hunger food drive and local mail carriers hope this year's drive will be the best ever.

You can donate food to the hungry Saturday without ever leaving your house.

Letter carriers are looking for items such as canned soup, canned vegetables, canned meats and fish, pasta, rice or cereal.

"We often see an increase in need when school is out", he said. "We're having to purchase food items as well as toiletries".

High Point University students, faculty and staff kick-started the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive this week with a donation of almost 7,000 pounds of nonperishable food.
