Sally Yates Hearing on Russian Meddling An Odd Display of Senatorial Bluster

The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence has issued a subpoena to former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who resigned amid a storm of controversy after he lied to senior White House officials, including Vice President Mike Pence, about a secret phone call with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Mark Warner, the committee's Democratic vice chairman, issued a joint statement saying the panel chose to issue the subpoena after Flynn, through his lawyer, declined to cooperate with an April 28 request to turn over the documents.

The senators claim they requested the documents on April 28, but they say Flynn "declined, through counsel, to cooperate with the committee's request".

Stone told NBC's "Today" he wants to testify, since members of congressional panels involved in the Russian Federation probe "have disparaged me publicly".

Some Republicans veered away from Russian Federation to focus on issues such as whether the Obama administration had improperly revealed the names of Trump associates contained in surveillance records.

Trump defended Flynn, saying he was a "very good person". Even after Yates' initial explanation on January 26, White House Counsel Donald McGahn didn't seem to get it.

Flynn, who was named by Trump as his national security adviser after the election, emerged at the center of the controversy when it was revealed he secretly discussed U.S. sanctions with the Russian ambassador to the United States in December.

Although Graham admitted that he had no evidence of improper business links between Trump and Russian Federation, he said he was interested in the matter and would like to look into it.

"The vice president was unknowingly making false statements to the public and we believed that General Flynn was compromised with respect to the Russians", said Yates before the panel.

Republican Sen. John Cornyn said her actions with regard to the executive order were "enormously disappointing" and accused her of undermining the powers of the President because she disagreed with Trump's order "as a policy matter".

"As he's noted, Lieutenant General Flynn was asked for his resignation because he misled the vice president".

A spokesman for Flynn did not immediately return a request for comment when asked about the subpoenas.

And she made it perfectly clear that it was because of legitimate concerns that the Russians had proof that the national security adviser was lying.
