Former French PM Manuel Valls pledges allegiance to Emmanuel Macron's movement

Repeating an idea that was shared by nearly all candidates in the French presidential election, Macron also said that Europe "should protect" workers and ensure "coherence and cohesion in an increasingly uncertain and unsettled world". All that's missing, it seems, are a butcher, a baker and a candlestick-maker.

Macron served as economy minister in a Socialist government under Valls, but left to make his successful bid for president at the head of his own start-up party.

This was the 2016 USA presidential election all over again, but fortunately, on Sunday, French voters elected the level-headed Macron.

"I will be a candidate in the presidential majority and I wish to join up to his movement, namely the "Republic on the Move", Valls told RTL radio. With no representation in the country's National Assembly the young leader's initial challenge is to secure his party's first seats in June's crucial parliamentary elections.

The Socialists are torn between the radical left of their defeated candidate Benoit Hamon and the more centrist, pro-business branch led by Manuel Valls, who was prime minister under Hollande.

The names of Mr Macron's 577 candidates in the legislative elections are to be announced on Thursday. But he now needs to consolidate a win in which a good part of those who backed him in the playoff against Le Pen came from political parties that voted to stop her rather than to put him in the driving seat for the next five years.

No timetable was given for a possible meeting with Macron, who will take the oath of office on Sunday.

The former investment banker's victory over Ms Le Pen has been hailed as the strongest sign that populism may be peaking in Europe after setbacks for nationalists in the Netherlands and Austria.

After losing to Macron on Sunday, Le Pen said she wanted to transform the party, while other party officials said an alternative name was being considered.

Addressing his supporters in the grand courtyard of the Louvre, Macron said he would defend France and Europe.

The Prime Minister added that he is looking forward to working with Macron to further deepen the cooperation between India and France.

Marine Le Pen, his far-right opponent, called Macron to concede her defeat after voters rejected her "French-first" nationalism by a large margin.

"We must make sure that in the United Kingdom we also have a strong mandate to take a strong position into our negotiating table", she said.

European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker has also followed up his congratulations to Mr Macron with an appeal for him to cut public spending.
