Phoenix police announce arrest in serial street shootings

A man was arrested Monday in a string of serial killings that rattled a Phoenix neighborhood a year ago, marking a major break in a case that involved nine deaths and a dozen separate shootings.

Phoenix Police have arrested a suspect in a series of seemingly random street shootings that gripped the city for more than a year, authorities said Monday.

The case finally broke when Saucedo was arrested last month in connection with the August 2015 fatal shooting of 61-year-old Raul Romero, who had a relationship with Saucedo's mother.

On Monday, they announced they had arrested Saucedo while providing scant detail about what motivated him or details about how they made a break in the case, other than to credit tips.

Police said most of the shootings happened in the low-income neighborhood of Maryvale as the victims walked down streets or stood in their yards.

A defense attorney for Saucedo did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment Monday night.

The attacks had spread fear through Phoenix previous year, with many shops closing early as most of the shootings took place late at night.

One tipster could receive a $75,000 reward for information leading to the arrest, police said. He said he recognized Saucedo's face.

Castro-Garcia, 19, was shot and killed on June 10, 2016, when five of the victims were shot within a 10-day period.

Saucedo, 23, is accused of carrying out the separate murders which police previously described as the work of a serial killer.

"Our hearts go out to the surviving families", Phoenix police chief Jeri Williams said.

The Maricopa County prosecutor is yet to decide which charges they would formally bring against him for trial.

The next victim after Romero's death was 22-year-old Jesse Olivas who was shot dead on January 1, 2016.

A tip from a member of the public led to his arrest for the eight other murders, police revealed on Monday.

Aaron Saucedo, 23, has been arrested in the "Serial Street Shooter" case.

Lora Romero said Saucedo's arrest, while a relief, reopened the wounds of losing her father - a hard-working, generous man who loved to watch football, play softball and tell amusing stories to his kids.

She said he preferred playing basketball with friends to partying. "But they wanted me to find out from them and not the news".

All but one of the killings took place in a predominantly Latino neighborhood between March and July 2016. She told the Republic she was still trying to process the news.

"I'm not sure if he knows yet", Syliva Ellis said, her voice cracking.

"Right now, I've got to collect all my feelings first", she said, taking a deep breath.

"The only thing I can say is thank God there's going to be justice and we leave it in God's hands".

The gunman committed the murders while driving one of a handful of cars including a black BMW 5-series and a white Cadillac.
