US submarine arrives in South Korea

The US Navy submarine arrived in the port city of Busan, reports CNN.

The submarine, which is capable of launching up to 150 Tomahawk cruise missiles from more than 1,500 kilometres, is due in the South Korean port of Busan today.

Two Japanese destroyers conducted exercises on Monday with a us aircraft carrier strike group that is also headed for Korean waters, sent by Trump as a warning to the North.

The port call by the USS Michigan, announced by the US military in South Korea, came as the top nuclear envoys from South Korea, Japan, and the United States were to meet in Tokyo to discuss responses to the North's refusal to give up its nuclear programme.

Joseph Yun, US Special Representative on North Korea policy, said he discussed American policy to "enhance pressure" on the North "because we really do not believe that North Korea is ready to engage us towards denuclearisation". The aircraft carrier strike group began joint drills with Japanese destroyers in the western Pacific Ocean this weekend and was expected to head north after that.

"We are sending an armada, very powerful", Trump said.

"You can see he's starting to get very paranoid... and we need to keep the pressure up".

Pyongyang reacted angrily to the aircraft carrier deployment, threatening to sink it and launch a "super-mighty pre-emptive strike" against what it called USA aggression. Reclusive North Korea said at the weekend it was ready to sink the USA aircraft carrier, which Trump had ordered to waters off the Korean peninsula as a warning to the North.

"When a missile is launched from North Korea, it will not take long to reach Japan", one response in to a "frequently asked question" reads, according to the Post.

North Korea launched two missile tests this month while US President Donald Trump and his senior aides have warned that "all options are on the table" against Pyongyang, including military action.

Japanese officials have informed citizens that they will receive only a 10-minute warning in the event of a North Korean missile attack.

"People have put blindfolds on for decades, and now it's time to solve the problem".

In a phone call with Trump on Sunday, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged caution.

But any decision by Trump to resort to military action would be highly risky, principally because the capital of close ally South Korea lies within range of North Korea artillery and rockets.

"It's hard to predict how North Korea will respond". "Beijing can not possibly satisfy both sides".

The US earlier threatened to strike North Korea if it tried to test-fire an intercontinental ballistic missile.

"This is a real threat to the world, whether we want to talk about it or not". After withdrawing from the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty in 2003, North Korea has gone on to conducting several nuclear tests, most recently in September 2016.

The incessant drum beat was continued last week with statements from the U.S. defence and state departments.

The Chinese foreign ministry has previously said any sanctions taken against North Korea must be approved through the UN Security Council, and it opposed unilateral sanctions.

The State Department denounced North Korea in similar terms before issuing a thinly veiled warning.

South Korea's military said it's maintaining "firm readiness". His spokesman, Mark Toner, said Wednesday that another tactic is getting nations around the world to close down North Korean embassies and consulates, or suspending them from worldwide organizations.

The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force is planning another joint exercise soon with the Carl Vinson in the Sea of Japan.
