Holiday Inn, Crown Plaza, 10 Others Affected

Holiday Inn customers urged to check credit card statements after widespread hack

"Many more properties implemented SPS after September 29, 2016, and the implementation of SPS ended the ability of the malware to find payment card data", IHG wrote.

The company said franchises that were using the group's point-to-point encrypted payment acceptance system, known as IHG Secure Payment Solution, before the time the malware has been tracked back to were not affected.

The company did an internal investigation and found crooks made away with credit card numbers, expiration dates, security codes and card holder names. For customers, though, the issue might be less, "how many hotels" and more, "how will this affect me?"

The hack appears to have happened between September 29 and December 29 of previous year, when hackers used malware to obtain information from cards used at the front desk.

IHG finally reported the findings from an investigation into a breach of the company's payment systems.

Investigators Eradicated Point-of-Sale Malware by March, IHG SaysMathew J. Schwartz (euroinfosec) • April 19, 2017 Affected hotels included such IHG brands as Crowne Plaza, Intercontinental, Kimpton and Holiday Inn. In February, IHG told Krebs that it had only identified a dozen affected hotels.

The company noted there was no indication other guest information was affected.

Based on a new search tool which allows customers to check their own stay state-by-state, the sheer number of properties now numbers in the thousands.

Other eastern North Carolina locations affected include: Holiday Inn Express in Havelock; Staybridge Suites in Jacksonville; Holiday Inn Express in Morehead City; Holiday Inn Express Oceanfront in Nags Head; Holiday Inn Express and Candlewood Suites, both on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. IHG is also offering more information to USA residents at 855-330-6367 and for residents outside the U.S.at 800-290-9989 - both from 8 a.m.to 8 p.m. EST on weekdays.

"It is always advisable to remain vigilant to the possibility of fraud by reviewing your payment card statements for any unauthorised activity".

Thousands of SC residents might have had their credit card numbers swept up previous year in a major data breach at one of the nation's largest hotel chains.
