Williams to miss rest of season after announcing pregnancy

Novak also confirmed that Serena won't be able to play for the rest of the year but was looking forward to make a comeback in 2018.

Serena Williams has revealed she is 20 weeks pregnant.

But the post was quickly taken down, lending to an air of mystery over its meaning.

Hours after Serena Williams seemed to accidentally post photos of her baby bump on Snapchat, the tennis overlord's publicist has confirmed the impending arrival of her blessed bébé.

Here at Now we're sending HUGE congratulations to Serena and Alexis on this lovely news.

"I've known women who are back to running fast 5Ks in a month because they ran probably up until 36 weeks without much problem", said James Pivarnik, a kinesiology professor at Michigan State University.

Williams, who announced her engagement to the co-founder of community news and chat site Reddit, Alexis Ohanian, in December, is top of the all-time list of major winners since Grand Slams accepted professional players in 1968.

Wiliams photo post is reminiscent to the Instagram announcement made by her friend, music star Beyonce, in February.

The well-wishes poured in after the confirmation, with fellow American Andy Roddick tweeting: "There's going to be a baby GOAT (greatest of all time). Let that sink in", wrote Twitter user @noelleharmony.

Her victory over older sister Venus broke a tie with Steffi Graf for the most Grand Slam singles championships in the sport's modern era.

Australians Evonne Goolagong and Margaret Court also won majors after having children. The star player has yet to play in another game after the Australian Open though, having pulled out of her other two scheduled events (Indian Wells and Miami) due to a left knee injury. That enabled Kerber to retake the top ranking, though Serena is assured a return to No1 in next week's table when the points from last year's Porsche Grand Prix drop off.

Kerber just hasn't been able to match Williams' results from past year and will thus lose her top spot.

Williams would not be the first tennis player to return to the court following a pregnancy.

Belgian former world No.1 Kim Clijsters retired and had a child before coming back at age 26 and winning three grand slam titles as a mother. Most marvelled at the idea that the 23-time Grand Slam victor was pregnant in January's Australian Open, when she won yet another title.

Since the birth of son Leo, Azarenka has returned to training and plans to return to competition at the WTA tournament in Stanford, California, in July.
