Trump says US, Italy to work on 'reciprocal' trade relationship

Italy has been on the front lines of a migrant crisis that has stretched financial resources and wrought political turmoil across the European Union as millions of asylum-seekers and migrants have sought refuge in Europe.

Gentiloni also urged the US and other world powers to "Please keep Africa on top of our agenda", saying various conflicts and crises in sub-Saharan Africa have also helped fuel the migrant crisis. "A divided country and in conflict would make civility worse", the prime minister added.

USA presidents typically avoid weighing in on specific candidates running in overseas election.

Trump's meeting with the third-largest Eurozone economy included economic and trade discussions as well as security issues.

"It was a awful agreement".

At Thursday's news conference, Trump didn't specifically weigh in on the French election, nor would he say outright whether he supported countries staying in the EU.

He said of Iran, "I think they are doing a tremendous disservice to an agreement that was signed". "I can tell you that".

President Donald Trump responded to reports of a shooting Thursday in Paris by saying it looked like a terrorist attack.

The two leaders also disagreed on policy in Libya.

Last year, US -led air power drove ISIS from its safe haven in Sirte and into Libya's southern desert.

Trump was meeting with Gentiloni as news of the incident broke.

"However, we were right, reacting to what happened", the Italian leader said.

Gentiloni said, "We need a stable and unified Libya".

Trump is also offering condolences from the U.S.to the people of France.

Gentiloni reaffirmed his country's pledge to reach 2 percent support for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, but also pointed to Italy's military presence in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere as proof of his country's security commitment. Last year, Italy spent a little more than 1 percent ($23 billion) to that end - instead of the $43 billion that would represent 2 percent of its GDP.

"We know that this will be a gradual process".

"But we have to be aware of the fact that this push that goes against free trade as a catalyst for world growth. that is why we need to work politically, culturally and economically to fight against this trend".

After meeting with Gentiloni on Thursday, Trump appeared to affirm the United States' commitment to Europe.

President Donald Trump sat down for his first meeting with Italy's prime minister as he looked to build worldwide relationships to deal with global crises amid distancing from other countries over the administration's trade policies.

"And it is also in my opinion - in my very strong opinion - important for the United States".
