Imagination likely to see Apple royalties slashed, then end

A series of leaks and supply chain reports over the last few weeks have claimed that Apple is experiencing production issues with some features such as the 3D sensor and in-display fingerprint scanner.

"Apple's commitment to 100% recycled materials is ambitious, and highlights the need for greater urgency across the sector to reduce resource consumption and e-waste that are causing significant impacts on the environment and human health", Gary Cook, Greenpeace's Senior IT Analyst, said in a statement.

Previously Apple stopped buying cobalt and reassessed its supply chain when the process was identified with having connections to child labor in the Congo.

Apple, which already powers 96 percent of its facilities with renewable energy, has a new environmental goal: to one day build all its gadgets using only recycled materials.

Separately, Apple has made inroads in reducing its reliance on conflict minerals - raw materials such as tungsten, tantalum, and gold that originate from the war-torn Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and adjacent countries.

"We are working to see that (Apple) brings its entire component making ecosystem to Bengaluru and begins to export from here".

Lisa Jackson's full comments on the 2017 environmental report can be read over at VICE, and Apple's full Environmental Responsibility Report, which goes into much more detail on its recycling efforts, packaging, water usage, and carbon footprint, is available here. Because of this - and it's obvious need for continued profits - Apple continues to reject the idea that the company could meet its environmental goals sooner if it made its products last longer, and gave its customers the ability to easily fix them on their own. She added that while they are nervous, they think it is very important because they believe it is where technological advances should be going.

It's also found a way of producing aluminum so that the iPhone 7 enclosure uses 27 percent less of the material than the iPhone 6, while pumping out 60 percent less greenhouse gas emissions.

"They also have control over how the products are designed", Greenpeace's Cook says, "and should be made with an eye toward making products easier to fix so they have a longer lifespan".

For its redesigned phone, Apple has tested multiple prototypes with manufacturing partners in Asia, including some versions that use curved glass and stainless steel, according to one of the people. Last year, Apple sold 78.3 million iPhone 7 and 7 Plus units, so racking up over 80 million sales for its highly hyped upcoming iPhones is an actual possibility.

Still, Apple's promise is a step in the right direction, even if the company still doesn't know how exactly it will come to fruition.
