Massive US bomb death toll rises to 94

"No civilian has been hurt and only the base which Daesh used to launch attacks in other parts of the province, was destroyed", defence ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri had reportedly said in a statement.

According to Indian intelligence officials, Murshid Mohammed, in his 20s, who hailed from Kasaragode in Kerala, was among the IS militants killed after the United States military struck the IS' position in Nangarhar province, near the Pakistan border, on Thursday with a massive 10-tonne missile-powered bomb.

The officials said that Gen. John Nicholson has standing authority to use the bomb, which is called the Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb (MOAB).

"US and Afghan forces had been unable to advance because ISIS -which has expanded into Afghanistan in recent years - had mined the area with explosives", notes CNN.

The huge bomb, delivered via an MC-130 transport plane, has a blast yield equivalent to 11 tonnes of TNT, and the weapon was originally designed as much to intimidate foes as to clear broad areas.

Officially known as the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb (MOAB), the US military deployed the massive 21,600-pound bomb in Afghanistan's Nangarhar province on Thursday, marking the first time the USA used it in battle. Afghan officials had earlier said the bombing had killed 36 IS fighters, adding that there there were "no military and civilian casualties at all".

The US estimates 600 to 800 IS fighters are present in Afghanistan, mostly in Nangarhar.

"We pulled out 90 dead bodies of fighters who lived underground in those tunnels and caves for years, operating and planning attack across the country". A U.S. Marine was killed in that province last week amid ongoing counter-terrorism activities.

The bombing came only a week after US President Donald Trump ordered missile strikes against Syria in retaliation for a suspected chemical attack, and as China warned of the potential for conflict amid rising US tensions with North Korea. "And with the maximum amount of caution so that we don't cause civilian casualties".

The U.S. maintains over 8,000 troops in Afghanistan, training local forces and conducting counterterrorism operations.

The office of President Ashraf Ghani said there was "close coordination" between the US military and Afghan government over the operation in Achin. Its fighters have been engaged in a years-long insurgency against the government and global forces in Afghanistan. A MOAB is a 21,600 pound, Global Positioning System (GPS)-guided munition that is US's most powerful non-nuclear bomb.

Nangarhar's Achin district is the birthplace of Daesh in Afghanistan.
