Athletics: Kenya's Kiplagat wins women's Boston Marathon

121st Boston Marathon is Meb's last run, Rupp's first

She remained involved with the event, supporting female runners and providing TV commentary in Boston for the last 37 years. But despite this aggressive attempt to force her to stop running, Switzer never lost her stride. In a recent interview, she recalled, "I said, 'This is going to change my life, maybe going to change women's sports and change the world'".

Runners in the Boston Marathon had high temperatures to deal with.

The 121st Boston Marathon takes place Monday, and two Portland-based, ex-University of OR runners figure to be in the thick of the battle for individual titles. An iconic photo shows race official Jock Semple attempting to confiscate her number as she headed to a finish in 4 hours and 20 minutes.

On April 17, 2017, 50 years after her historic run, Switzer will run the Boston Marathon once more at the age of 70 with her original bib number 261 to pay homage to the streets of the city where women's running was redefined and changed, forever. She said she used her initials because her first name was misspelled on her birth certificate, Kathrine, and she was exhausted of repeating the error. "There were a couple of times I didn't know if I could make it to the finish, especially at about Mile 23", he says. She passed 35K in 1:59:15.

"Instinctively I jerked my head around quickly and looked square into the most vicious face I'd ever seen", Switzer wrote in her memoir. "I'm humbled to win the race".

Semple and Switzer became friends several years later.

Switzer used her influence to campaign to get women into the Boston Marathon by 1972.

American Galen Rupp, a bronze medalist in the Rio Olympic marathon and a silver medalist in the 10,000-meter run in the London Olympics, was second in the men's race in 2:09:58.

"American distance running is looking good today", said sixth-place finisher Abdi Abdirahman, a Somali immigrant and Tucson resident who is a four-time Olympian.

If he finishes, the 32-year-old Kenyan will be the first professional to complete all six major marathons plus the world championships and the Olympics. In 2015, she created 261 Fearless, a nonprofit that wants to use running to empower women.

Why didn't she drop out of the 1967 race?

Even if you're not a runner yourself, I hope you'll join me in celebrating the strides we as women have made - both on the race course, and off.

"I have it hidden in my house", Switzer said.
