McMaster: North Korea's provocations 'can't continue'

The North Korean missile, which was sacked from the Sinpo area, exploded nearly immediately, according to military officials in South Korea and the US.

The attempted missile launch comes a day after the North held a military parade in its capital marking the birth anniversary of the state founder where what appeared to be new ballistic missiles were displayed.

The U.S. Pacific Command said the missile "blew up nearly immediately", adding the type of missile was being analysed.

It has said it has developed and would launch a missile that can strike the mainland United States but officials and experts believe it is some time away from mastering the necessary technology.

Last August a submarine-launched ballistic missile tested from Sinpo flew 500 kilometres (300 miles) towards Japan.

"This morning's provocation from the North is just the latest reminder of the risks each one of you face every day in the defence of the freedom of the people of South Korea and the defence of America in this part of the world".

Speaking from Afghanistan on ABC, he made a point of stating several times that China - North Korea's key ally - is now concerned about the reclusive communist state's behavior.

Military options available to Trump range from a sea blockade aimed at enforcing sanctions to cruise missile strikes on nuclear and missile facilities to a broader campaign aimed at overthrowing leader Kim Jong Un.

North Korea has conducted five nuclear tests, including two a year ago.

The failed show of force by the DPRK came amid mounting tensions on the Korean Peninsula, which was caused by the USS Carl Vinson and its accompanying warships that have re-routed and headed to the peninsula about a week earlier.

US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said President Donald Trump had been briefed on the latest test but had "no further comment".

The White House has said Trump has put the North "on notice".

Intelligence agencies in South Korea and the United States were attempting to extract more details about the missile, including its exact type.

National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster said in a television appearance that the U.S.

This is the third visit to South Korea by a top official from the Trump administration. It has repeatedly called for talks while appearing increasingly frustrated with the North.

"We weren't surprised by it, we were anticipating it", the adviser travelling with U.S. Vice President Mike Pence told reporters, adding initial reports said it was a medium-range missile and failed four to five seconds into the launch.

Washington and Seoul are deploying the US Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system in the South to counter the North's missile threats, despite angry opposition from China.

However, while North Korea's provocations could simply be aimed at bringing Washington to the negotiating table, the saber rattling is already having an economic impact.
