Woman fatally stabbed by Palestinian in Jerusalem, authorities say

Israel's Walla news website, however, has since reported that the stabbing victim had succumbed to her injuries. The man was restrained and pinned down to the ground by police and civilians at the scene before being taken into investigation.

Jerusalem's Hadassah Medical Center said the woman died soon after she was rushed there following the attack on Friday.

The British embassy told the Guardian that it was in touch with local authorities following the incident, but didn't comment beyond that. "We are providing support for her family at this hard time and are in touch with the local authorities".

Bladon was a theology student at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, who had begun her guest studies at the Hebrew University, which confirmed her identity to the media, in January. It is unclear if she is also an Israeli citizen. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent condolences in a statement issued by his office.

Israeli security service, Shin Bet, who apparently disclosed the identity of the assailant, said in a statement: "This is one of many instances where a Palestinian suffering personal strife... chooses to carry out an attack in order to find release for his problems".

According to the Shin Bet, Tamimi recently tried to commit suicide by swallowing a razor blade at a hospital in northern Israel, and was found guilty of sexually assaulting his daughter in 2011.

Emergency services and police are seen at the scene of an stabbing attack in Jerusalem Friday, April 14, 2017.

A young British tourist was stabbed to death in Jerusalem on Friday, officials said, close to the Old City as it was packed with vacationers, Christians celebrating Good Friday and Jews enjoying Passover.

A wave of street attacks by Palestinians in Israel, Jerusalem and the Israeli-occupied West Bank since October 2015 has previously killed 37 Israelis and two American tourists.

According to AFP figures, some 250 Palestinians, a Jordanian and a Sudanese migrant have also been killed, majority in the course of carrying out attacks, Israel says, and numerous others in clashes with troops in the West Bank and at the Gaza border, as well as in Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip in response to rocket attacks.

Others were shot dead during protests or clashes, while some were killed in Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip.
