Man City enjoy convincing win against Southampton

Man City Pep Guardiola Alexis Sanchez

Manchester City needed patience on Saturday's Premier League match against a stubborn Southampton defense that made things really tough for the Citizens.

"Manchester United have a game [Sunday] and another game in hand and still have to come to the Etihad", Guardiola added.

"So hopefully he can be fit for the rest of the season because he's an important player for us".

Sure there are others in the Premier League who have signature celebrations, dance routines and/or unique handshakes.

"We had that in the Monaco game and we can not forget how good they are after what they did in Dortmund".

But for all City's early dominance of possession, Southampton created - and missed - the best early chance after 15 minutes.

And Manchester City will look to consolidate their place in the Top 4, when they take the trip down south to face Southampton at the St. Mary's Stadium on Saturday evening.

Southampton have home advantage against Manchester City and I like the look of Saints at close to 4/1 to spring a surprise.

City ended a run of four games without a win by claiming three important points in the battle for the top-four positions with a routine victory over Hull last weekend. The most recent game that took place in Manchester on October 23rd, previous year was a 1:1 draw and the latest meeting at St. Mary's Stadium went Southampton's way, 4:2 on May 1, 2016.

Kompany will have garnered many headlines for his goal but it was his calming, imperious and faultless defensive display that will have been most pleasing for City manager Pep Guardiola.

City are set to be without Bacary Sagna for the trip to Southampton - but skipper Vincent Kompany is pushing for a starting spot.

During the course of his stay in Serie A, Hart has managed an overall 31 appearances, managing just six clean sheets and has conceded 50 goals.

Two goals in three minutes in the second half lifted Manchester City above Liverpool, if only for a day, in the race for a place in next season's Champions League.

After a goalless first half at St Mary's Stadium, Pep Guardiola saw Kompany head in his first Premier League goal since August 2015 from David Silva's corner. Hull didn't do themselves any favors in the first half when Ahmed Elmohamady scored an own goal, deflecting a Jesus Navas cross into the net.

But a last 16 exit to Monaco - the first time Guardiola had failed to reach at least the semis in seven attempts - led the City manager to a damning assessment of his squad's standing in Europe. The energy of Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares at full-back has also provided stability to the team, while Oriol Romeu has been a rock in midfield, although the latter is missing through suspension, after picking up his 10th booking of the campaign last weekend.
